Program Description:

The Community Service Society’s Health Initiatives Department conducts cutting-edge policy research and writing, advocacy, and health coverage consumer assistance. There are several projects based in this Department. Health Care For All New York (“HCFANY”) is a statewide coalition of consumer advocacy organizations dedicated to securing access to affordable, comprehensive, and high quality health care for all. Community Health Advocates (“CHA”), New York’s designated health insurance consumer assistance program, helps New Yorkers use health insurance and access care. The CSS Navigator Network (“CNN”) is a statewide network of organizations providing enrollment assistance services for the new health care marketplace, NY State of Health. The Independent Consumer Advocacy Network (“ICAN”) is New York State’s Managed Long Term Care/FIDA Ombudsprogram. Harlem Health Advocacy Partners (“HHAP”) bring CSS’s health insurance enrollment and post-enrollment assistance to individuals residing in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) housing in East and Central Harlem.

Internship Description:

This internship provides a hands-on opportunity to participate in advocacy, outreach, and communication efforts that directly affect implementation of the Affordable Care Act in New York State. It is a hybrid position incorporating work with all Health Initiatives programs, and the intern will help with our advocate and consumer material development and review process.  The intern will form part of a dynamic team working to ensure that advocates and consumers are equipped with the information and materials to improve the access and quality of health care for all New Yorkers.

  • Generating content for Health program social media accounts
  • Developing website content
  • Conducting research on New York State health policy
  • Developing one pagers, brochures, handouts, PowerPoint presentations, or other materials to be used in CSS Health Initiatives outreach, marketing, or programming
  • Participating in other activities and perform other duties as may be required


Candidate Requirements:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree or Undergraduate senior with interest in and knowledge of health policy, health care reform, and strong commitment to serving low-income populations
  • Strong analytical, writing and communication skills
  • Ability to multitask while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Experience using Microsoft Office software, including: Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with blogging and social media, including Wordpress, Facebook, and Twitter a plus
  • Time limited with an average of 10-15 hours per week
