The mission of the Community Service Society is to identify problems which create a permanent poverty class in New York City, and to advocate the systemic changes required to eliminate such problems. CSS will focus on enabling, empowering and promoting opportunities for poor families and individuals to develop their full potential, to contribute to society, and to realize social, economic and political opportunities.
Our Urban Agenda
1. Advocate for better job opportunities to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty that particularly affects communities of color.
Our proposals advance education, training, and work opportunities for groups facing barriers to employment—including disconnected young people and the formerly incarcerated.
2. Promote policies and programs that advance the economic security of the poor and working poor.
Our focus is on preserving and expanding access to public and employer benefits, financial services, and other supports that encourage the economic mobility of our constituents.
3. Promote health care reform as an essential strategy for alleviating barriers to employment and economic stability.
We identify inequities in the health care system and advocate for large-scale solutions that make health care more affordable and accessible for all.
