Economic Pressure and Workplace Culture Drive New Yorkers to Work While Sick

Rachel Swaner

Summary:

In September and October 2025, the Community Service Society of New York surveyed 4,000 New York State residents as part of our Annual Survey of Housing and Economic Security. The survey included questions about experiences with illness and work.

Even with New York State’s paid sick leave requirements, many workers still face barriers to taking time off when ill. Among the 2,039 who worked full-time, part-time, or freelance and experienced illness in the past year, more than two-thirds (68 percent) reported working while sick.
