Teetering on the Edge: The Unheard Third Survey Reveals Pervasive Financial Insecurity Among New Yorkers
Hilary Wilson, Debipriya Chatterjee
Summary:
A recent poll by the National True Cost of Living Coalition finds that, despite economic improvements, millions of middle-class Americans are still struggling and living paycheck to paycheck. The expiration of pandemic supports and high inflation have worsened economic insecurity, with the Federal Reserve reporting a 6-point drop in those feeling “okay financially” since 2021, now at 72%.
New York City residents face similar challenges as living costs rise. This report draws on CSS’s 2023 Unheard Third survey, the longest-running poll of low-income households, to examine NYC’s financial struggles and offer policy recommendations for greater economic security.
