Statement: Another Act of Police Violence Goes Unpunished

Yesterday, the Attorney General of Kentucky announced a meaningless indictment of first-degree wanton endangerment against one of the three police officers who killed Breonna Taylor in her home on the night of March 13, 2020. The charge is connected to shooting into the neighboring apartment unit.

Yesterday, a wall in Kentucky received more justice than Breonna Taylor.

Breonna Taylor should be alive today. Her death is a tragedy, and it's gut-wrenching that her family and community members were denied justice in what has become the latest example of police officers not being held to account for committing harms against Black and Brown people. For months, millions of people worldwide have joined the movement to say her name and demand justice for Breonna Taylor, calling for all three officers responsible for Breonna’s murder to be fired, arrested, and charged. It's depressing that this result isn't even surprising – not unlike the failure to deliver justice in the cases of Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Oscar Grant and countless others.

Yesterday was a hard day. Today is another hard one but we must keep fighting to hold all three officers who killed Breonna accountable, we must keep demanding change and we must keep the spotlight on reform until the system works for everyone.
