Statement: CSS Applauds Mayor de Blasio’s Support for ‘Good Cause Eviction’ Protections and Deeper Income Targeting in Housing Plan
We are very glad to hear the Mayor’s endorsement of Good Cause Eviction protections. Tenants should not have to worry about being evicted without cause – especially since fear of retaliation often prevents tenants from organizing to fight for decent conditions in their buildings. With the Mayor’s support we hope that tenants will be able to sleep more easily at night – and feel more comfortable starting tenant associations too.
We also welcome the Mayor’s commitment to keep improving the income targeting of the new housing being developed as part of the Housing New York plan. The city’s department of Housing Preservation and Development has been gradually increasing the share of the new apartments in the plan for households with incomes below about $30,000 – starting from a level of just a few percent under the Bloomberg plan. By now committing to target 25 percent of apartments to that income level, Mayor de Blasio is setting an important new mark.
Further, we commend the mayor’s investment in innovative housing models. By committing 3,000 units to community land trust development, the mayor is promoting permanent affordability and resident control.
