ABOUT CSS
The Community Service Society (CSS) is one of New York City’s oldest not-for-profit organizations with a storied history on behalf of low-income residents. For over 160 years CSS has stood at the forefront of efforts to integrate the working poor and new immigrants into the economic and civic life of the nation’s largest city. Our contributions to the city have included spearheading the field of social work and providing the impetus for the founding of the Columbia University School of Social Work, developing the prototype for the free school lunch program, creating the first model tenement, aiding victims of the Titanic disaster, and most recently, individuals affected by the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, working to increase the number of Blacks and Latinos in the New York City Council, and research focused on systemic impediments to economic opportunity.
CSS approaches the problems and challenges facing low-income New Yorkers in the 21st Century with the same fervor we did upon our founding almost two centuries ago. And we do so with the same hopeful attitude, knowing that the spirit of New York City is embodied in the belief that personal circumstances can be overcome through individual initiative, the support of strong families and communities, and targeted investments by government and the private sector.
