Welcome to the civic Blog of the Community Service Society (CSS) of New York - Turnstile. Its name is synonymous with urban living; the means by which city residents enter the one environment – mass transit - in which the paths of all groups cross and representative of the movement of people toward a pre-determined destination.
Turnstile was created to provide an outlet for civic discourse, data sharing, community mobilization and political action. And through this portal we hope to inform, organize, and build consensus toward a framework for action to expand economic opportunity for low-income New Yorkers.
Periodically we will highlight an issue that is relevant to low-income New Yorkers but has citywide implications. A group of invited contributors will comment on the issue and help frame the discussion. Our contributors represent the diversity of our city and have been selected for their unique perspectives. The public will also have the opportunity to comment on the issue and respond to the opinions of our contributors. Our goal is to promote a healthy exchange of ideas as we seek solutions to the myriad of challenges facing the working poor in our city.
By launching this portal we are explicitly challenging the conventional wisdom of a disengaged public, not concerned with the welfare of fellow citizens, and unwilling to participate in the web of civic activity that creates a healthy city. To the contrary, we believe there is dynamism within our communities, and that if respected, embraced and directed, can transform New York City.
In the coming months Turnstile will launch new “lines” that will enable you to connect to other members, community-based organizations, and public officials, launch and organize your own advocacy campaigns, and take action to influence government decision-makers.
