1 in 5 New Yorkers living in poverty = 1.7 million people.

Help the Community Service Society Help New Yorkers

The Problem:

One in five New Yorkers lives in poverty and is constantly on the brink of homelessness and ruin.

According to the Community Service Society's recent survey of New Yorkers with full-time jobs living in poverty, this year:

  • 33 percent fell behind in paying their rent or mortgage;
  • 32 percent had their utilities turned off;
  • 23 percent did not get or postponed needed medical care;
  • 9 percent went hungry because of lack of money.

Even two-income families are struggling to survive.

The Solution:

CSS works in the neighborhoods that need help most:

  • guiding New Yorkers through managed care plans — to the medical care they need;
  • tutoring at-risk schoolchildren in reading — to help break the cycle of poverty;
  • preventing the eviction of families from their homes;
  • providing direct emergency assistance for food, rent, and other essentials.

We help the poor help themselves — through voter registration, individual counseling, improved education, and advocacy.
