WORKSHOPS
Educating the Social Service
Professional
on Public Benefits
PBRC offers three-hour workshops on a full range of government
programs, basic through advanced levels geared to the social service
professional. Twice a year, in the spring and the fall, PBRC offers
our standard workshops. These standard workshops provide the participants
with the opportunity to apply knowledge through case examples and
question & answer. Participants receive an easy-to-follow workbook
complete with listings of local government offices, valuable resources,
advocacy tips and more. Workshop fees are $40 per person and can
also be given at individual agency locations for a fee of $500 per

In
addition, twice a year, in the summer and winter, PBRC offers training
on specialized topics in which our customers indicate an interest.
Many of these workshops are conducted by attorneys who specialize
in the field and are able to draw on their legal expertise to provide
valuable advocacy information for the social service provider.

Doors open at 9 a.m., refreshments are served. Workshops begin at 9:30.
How the workshops are conducted: The training will provide opportunities to apply knowledge through case examples and question and answer. Participants will receive an easy-to-follow workbook for use when working with clients.

| Domestic Violence and Public Benefits (CBS) |

Victims of domestic violence often feel powerless to improve their circumstances and are unaware of the resources that are available to assist them. Learn the dynamics of domestic violence and the rights of victims as they pertain to public benefits and child support. Included in this discussion is the kind of proof individuals must provide to receive a waiver of public assistance requirements and an overview of how to obtain an order of protection.

| Understanding Managed Care for Medicaid, Family Health Plus and Child Health Plus (MCCAP) |
Speaker(s): NYC MCCAP
Most New Yorkers with public health insurance access services through managed care plans. These plans build on the concept of a medical home for clients centering most (if not all) of a client's care in the plan. This training will go over how to access care in plan, what rights the client has and what to do when things go wrong.

| Domestic Violence Priority for NYCHA Public Housing and Section 8 (CBS) |

Learn how domestic violence victims can qualify for a priority status when applying for NYCHA and/or Section 8. Learn what the criteria is for new applicants seeking a priority and how an existing tenant or voucher holder can qualify for an emergency transfer. Learn tips for effective advocacy and other best practices when submitting applications. Learn about potential obstacles to successful applications such as immigration issues or criminal backgrounds. Learn about the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the protections offered to victims of domestic violence residing in public housing facing eviction.

| Welfare Fair Hearings (CBS) |

This training will provide the basic mechanics of representing a client at a Welfare fair hearing. The training is designed for advocates and will include an overview of a recipient's rights, preparing for the hearing (e.g. witness preparation, obtaining the necessary documents, research, scheduling and adjournments etc.). Advocacy materials to use for fair hearings will be available.

| Public Assistance Work Rules: Access to Education (CBS) |

Education and training can often provide a surer path to long-term economic security than a low-wage, dead-end job. This training is designed to introduce social service providers to New York City's education and training rules and policies for Public Assistance recipients and to assist them in effectively advocating for clients seeking to participate in education and training programs. Learn the rights of Public Assistance recipients -- both parents of dependent children and single adults -- to participate in educational programs, including adult basic education/literacy, job skills training, and degree programs, as well as receiving child care, transportation, and scheduling assistance in support of their educational goals.

| Employment Discrimination: From Familial Status to Past Criminal Record |
Speaker(s): Electra Yourke, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; and Paul Keefe, CSS Attorney
People entering the workforce may encounter different types of discrimination in the interview process. They may be asked questions about past drug use, family status and criminal records. This training will cover the type of employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin, which is illegal under the Federal Civil Rights ACT of 1964, and Title VII. It will also cover other types of discrimination which are illegal under New York State and New York City Law, such as discrimination based on marital status, criminal record and sexual orientation. The process of obtaining certificates of relief from disabilities will also be covered.

| Child Support and Public Benefits (CBS) |

The workshop will provide an introduction to New York's child support system and policies as they pertain to low-income families. The workshop will provide an overview of NYC's child support enforcement system, how child support interacts with public benefits and child care subsidies, vehicles for redressing wrongs in the child support system, and related advocacy issues. The workshop will highlight child support issues that are of particular significance to teen parents and the formerly incarcerated.
