In a segment on Arise America, CSS client Manpriya Samra shares her story of financial hardship that followed a medical emergency.
When the stomach ache that sent her to the emergency room turned out to be appendicitis, she underwent successful surgery, and returned home to recover. Then the bills arrived—totaling about $12,000. Uninsured and finishing up her college degree, Manpriya tried to arrange a payment plan, but hit a wall. Then she found CSS's Community Health Advocates. We negotiated with her doctors to substantially reduce what she owed, and secured a grant from the New York Times Neediest Cases fund to help cover what she had already paid.
Now out of debt, out of college, and insured through her employer, the 27-year-old has a message to share about the importance of having health coverage to protect against unforseen medical emergencies. Watch below:
