The Community Service Society is shocked and sad to learn of Jackie Berrien’s passing.  Jackie was an inspirational leader, a colleague and a friend.  CSS was fortunate to have worked with her both when she served as Associate Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and most recently as Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  Jackie’s accomplishments in the voting rights arena and in combating employment discrimination – particularly as experienced by individuals with criminal conviction histories – created lasting change that affects New York City and the nation.  Her forceful, insightful, kind and gentle presence will be greatly missed. CSS extends its condolences to her family, particularly her husband and our colleague and friend, Peter Williams.
