We Are People Who Care.
We are volunteers committed to improving the lives of others in our communities
and city. Retired and from diverse backgrounds, we have found a wonderfully
meaningful way to use our experience – helping school children.
We choose to serve in urban public schools because that’s where
we’re most needed. And we have the satisfaction of knowing that
as tutors of children at risk of developing reading problems, we’re
making a lasting difference in young lives.
The Experience Corps is people who want to help others grow. We believe
that we can help schoolchildren get the education they deserve by giving
them the tools they need. We strive to build a better city, school by
school, community by community, by enabling older and younger people to
work together.
What You Can Expect
Here's how it works: The Experience Corps Project recruits, trains, and
places volunteers. It puts them where they are most needed, in primary
schools in their local communities.
Experience Corps volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring to first and
second graders who are in danger of failing. Their tutoring helps children
at a critical age when learning basic skills can mean the difference between
a life outside the margins and a life well spent.
Our volunteers benefit from:
- intensive curriculum-based training
- workshops on providing literacy
- cross-disciplinary instruction
- technical assistance
- shared time with others who care
- a safe and accessible environment
- an opportunity to spend time meaningfully
- a renewed sense of community
Where to Volunteer
The Experience Corps currently has a presence in:
- South Bronx, Community School District 7
- Bedford-Stuyvesant, Community School District 16
- Central Harlem, Manhattan Community School District 5
