Working For Change Forum

The Working for Change Forum is a monthly policy briefing in Washington, D.C. that is held in the United States Capitol for congressional staff, policy advocates and academicians. Launched by the Community Service Society in 2007, with the support of Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY), chairman of the House Committee on Ways & Means, the forum focuses on issues impacting low-wage workers and explores policy remedies to improve their economic security.

The series is co-sponsored by the Washington D.C. based Coalition on Human Needs, under the leadership of Deborah Weinstein. Each month a panel of experts takes on an important issue facing the working poor and offers their insight into how our nation’s public policy can better support disadvantaged populations. The forum is webcast live over the CSS website and the video is posted on the site for continuous viewing, as are PowerPoint presentations by invited experts.

To date the Working for Change Forum has focused on a myriad of topics, ranging from second chance and reentry programs to an examination of economic stimulus proposals, with an emphasis in 2008 on the needs of “disconnected youth.” Our work in the past year has included supporting two bills - H.R. 7066 and H.R. 7053 - that were introduced in the 110th Congress by Rep. Rangel and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) that seek to engage young adults in the workforce. In 2009 we will continue to examine issues impacting young adults who are out of school and out of work, and focus our efforts on moving legislation in support of this population.

Participation in the forum is by invitation only. Please contact Janeene Freeman, CSS Director of Government Relations, at 212.614.5595 for additional information.

The next Working for Change Forum is scheduled for April 15, 2011
